College of Nurses declined to investigate Elizabeth Wettlaufer after 2014 firing

Apparently the College of Nurses of Ontario receives 1300 mandatory reports per year regarding the termination of nurses. With limited resources available it is not reasonable to expect the College to thoroughly investigate each case. Yet, failure to properly investigate in the case of Ms. Wettlaufer led to the deaths of many patients under her care. The current situation appears to be untenable but not necessarily the fault of the College.

Were these deaths preventable? Did the College fail to discharge its duty to protect the public? A public inquiry may help answer these tough questions.

In the meantime, the College continues to be mired in systemic delays dealing with complaints and reports.
